Thaddeus Kosciuszko designed the American defensive position at Saratoga (Bemis Heights, 1777) and then designed the West Point fortifications (1778–1780). His engineering work shaped both the battle that turned the war and the fortress that anchored the Hudson Valley for the war's remainder. Benedict Arnold led the charge that sealed Saratoga and later tried to sell West Point — his career connects both sites at their most dramatic moments.
