Anniversary of the Battles of Saratoga — Living History Weekend

Saratoga National Historical Park, Stillwater, NY

Saratoga National Historical Park's premier annual event commemorating the 1777 Battles of Freeman's Farm and Bemis Heights. Features large-scale battle reenactments, artillery demonstrations, period military encampments, musket firings, and ranger-led tours of the battlefield. Participants in Continental and British uniforms recreate key moments of the campaign that became the turning point of the American Revolution.

July 4th Independence Day Celebration at Saratoga National Historical Park

Trades Day

Saratoga National Historical Park

The American Northern Army encamped at Saratoga Battlefield in 1777 included thousands of Continental soldiers from New England, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. These soldiers wore a variety of colorful uniforms made of wool or linen, all of which were hand tailored. Their leather shoes were made by hand using a careful, painstaking process. Come to the park to see an 18th-century tailor and cordwainer (not a cobbler!) make these uniform parts using authentic period techniques.

Schuyler House Open House & Colonial Life Program

Schuyler House (General Philip Schuyler Estate), Schuylerville, NY

Seasonal living history programming at the historic Schuyler House, the country estate of Major General Philip Schuyler that was burned by the British during the 1777 campaign and quickly rebuilt. Rangers and costumed interpreters demonstrate 18th-century domestic life, discuss Schuyler's role in the Northern Campaign, and lead tours of the restored house and grounds. Special programs often coincide with the battle anniversary weekends.

Surrender Day Commemoration

Victory Woods — Surrender Site, Schuylerville, NY (Saratoga National Historical Park)

Annual ceremony marking the October 17, 1777 surrender of British General John Burgoyne and his army — the event that convinced France to enter the war as an American ally. Held at Victory Woods, the actual surrender site, the program includes wreath-laying ceremonies, musket and cannon salutes, remarks by park historians, and guided walks through the historic grounds where nearly 6,000 British and Hessian soldiers laid down their arms.

A series of public lectures and scholarly talks hosted by Saratoga National Historical Park exploring the military strategy, key personalities, and global consequences of the 1777 Saratoga Campaign. Topics have included Benedict Arnold's battlefield heroics and later treason, the role of Hessian auxiliaries, the Franco-American alliance, and the experiences of women and Native Americans during the campaign. Held at the park visitor center auditorium.
