Herkimer Monument, Oriskany Battlefield

An obelisk monument at the Oriskany Battlefield site commemorating the fallen, including General Nicholas Herkimer, who died of his wounds nine days after the battle. Herkimer, a German-American farmer and militia general, embodied the divided loyalties of the Mohawk Valley: his own brother was a Loyalist officer in the force that ambushed him. The monument is the focal point of annual commemorations.
