Fort Stanwix National Monument
Battlefield
A fully reconstructed Revolutionary War fort in Rome, New York — the destination Herkimer's relief column was marching toward when ambushed at Oriskany. Fort Stanwix was besieged by British forces under General Barry St. Leger for three weeks in August 1777. The garrison held, and the combined pressure of Oriskany and a feint by Benedict Arnold caused St. Leger to retreat. The fort is maintained by the National Park Service.
