Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site

The site of the Battle of Oriskany on August 6, 1777, one of the bloodiest engagements of the Revolution. Tryon County militia under Brigadier General Nicholas Herkimer were ambushed by a Loyalist and Iroquois force in a ravine near Oriskany Creek. Herkimer was mortally wounded early in the battle but continued to command from beneath a tree, smoking his pipe. The battle relieved pressure on Fort Stanwix. A monument and interpretive center mark the site.
