When the New Hampshire government lacked funds to equip troops for the Saratoga campaign, John Langdon pledged his personal fortune and credit to finance the expedition. His offer, coordinated with the Exeter-based Committee of Safety, made possible New Hampshire's significant contribution to the campaign where American forces surrounded and captured Burgoyne's entire British army in October 1777.
