New Hampshire Adopts First State Constitution

Meeting in Exeter, the New Hampshire Provincial Congress adopted a new constitution establishing republican self-government on January 5, 1776 — eight months before the Declaration of Independence and the first colony to take such a step. The document was explicitly provisional but its adoption was a direct repudiation of royal authority that put New Hampshire ahead of every other colony.
