Biography
Richard Gridley, at 64, was the oldest officer in the Continental Army and its most experienced engineer. He had designed the fortifications at Bunker Hill and continued building defensive works throughout the siege. His knowledge of siegecraft—how to build redoubts, where to place batteries, how to protect against artillery—was invaluable. Gridley represented the technical expertise that citizen-soldiers often lacked.
