Rhode Island
Rhode Island's two major towns represent the tension at the heart of the Revolution: Newport, occupied by the British for three years, and Providence, which emerged as the Patriot headquarters and naval center.
The contrast between occupied Newport and Patriot Providence gives students a rare chance to examine what life under occupation actually looked like — the economic disruption, the collaboration and resistance, and the slow destruction of a once-thriving mercantile city. Rhode Island was also home to one of the Continental Army's first Black regiments, the First Rhode Island, whose story challenges comfortable narratives about who fought and why.
